YOU'RE INVITED !

S.L.A.P. is the name for our new Springfield Legacy Foundation Archaeology Project, so named by the 15 archaeologists currently in residence from Columbia University in New York.  They are winding up their month with us here where they have been mapping and sampling our resource.  The results, to date, are proving to be amazing and we invite you all to come to Springfield Plantation from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, June 27th for our interactive archaeology exhibit and to meet the valiant crew.  We think SLAP is for the number of mosquitoes they clobbered during their daily digs that ran from 5:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. when they came back to catalogue, clean and file the day"s work.  In their 12-14 hour days, they dug over 2,000 test pits and in their spare time, they built a wattle and daub wall, fire pits, fired clay pots and are making a dugout canoe, all of which will be on display.

SLAP promises to be a 50 year project; it's potentially that good.  So, since we know that all of you are interested in such heady/earthy things, we hope that you"ll come down for the fun.  Matt Sanger, the project chief and his crew have earned our respect and thanks and you"ll enjoy them all.  So please come if you can and bring your families and friends.  We"ll have soft drinks and snacks, at least one member of our archaeological advisory board from other states, and lots to see and discuss. Special guest Dr. Chester DePratter (USC) will be on hand to discuss his current survey of Georgia's marsh hammocks.

Take Exit 76 off I-95.  Turn left at the light, cross the freeway going East and drive 6 miles on the main road to the big brown and white sign, Springfield Plantation and Dunham Farms.  Turn left and go down the dirt road.  The first two story wooden barn is your destination.

Thanks as always for your support,

Laura and Meredith Devendorf, and all the crew

P.S. Check out the Melon Bluff webpage for a little more information about SLAP...more pictures will be coming soon! www.melonbluff.com

MELON BLUFF NATURE AND HERITAGE RESERVE PRESENTS

"Diane Kirkland: Photography of the Georgia Coast"

8 November 2008-20 February 2009

OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8TH

2:00-4:00 P.M.

The exhibit features photographs that Diane Kirkland has taken as Georgia DNR's Artist-In-Residence over the past year. The exhibit is free and open to the public on Saturdays from 9 until 4 through Georgia Arbor Day (February 20, 2009) at Melon Bluff's Nature Center, 2999 Islands Hwy., between Midway and Sunbury.

An opening reception with the artist will be held Saturday, November 8, from 2-4 p.m. Refreshments will be served. For more information, please call (912) 880-4500 or visit www.melonbluff.com .

Currently the Artist-In-Residence for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Ms. Kirkland has been working on a series of landscapes from Ossabaw Island Georgia.

"These photographs are about the simple beauty found in the natural environment," Kirkland said. "Often, we seem to lose the connection with our natural surroundings and we seem very complacent to allow these sanctuaries to disappear. I would like for my pictures to show that these places are worthy of our attention."

In her role as senior photographer with Georgia Department of Economic Development for twenty five years, Kirkland gained valuable experience in handling photography for advertising campaigns, publications and websites. Her work has appeared in national and international publications, including the New York Times, Time Magazine, USA Today, Southern Living, and the Times of London.

In 2001, Kirkland was invited by former Governor Roy Barnes to collaborate with Georgia's poet laureate to create Oglethorpe's Dream, A Picture of Georgia, a photographic book depicting the beauty and cultural traditions of Georgia. In 2007, she created beautiful photographs for the book Democracy Restored, A History of the Georgia State Capitol.

Recently, the international publication Lenswork Magazine recently featured 18 of Kirkland's black and white natural landscapes of Georgia. The Georgia Council for the Arts and the Fulton County Arts Council both selected her to join their 2008-2010 Touring Artist Rosters, and she was also invited to join the Southern Arts Federation, which is a multi-media artist registry that spotlights outstanding artists who live and work in the South.

Kirkland will be judging a photographic competition celebrating Arbor Day at the close of her exhibit at Melon Bluff. For information about rules and entries, please contact Laura Devendorf at Melon Bluff, (912) 880-4500.
